Meditation: a healing journey

We live in a time when stress seems to be part of our daily lives. Pressures from work, family, social life, and even the expectations we place on ourselves can create a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts that wear us down physically and emotionally.

But did you know that meditation can be a true balm for your health and wellbeing?

As a Functional Medicine doctor, I see every day the impact that prolonged stress has on my patients’ health — it not only hinders healing but can also trigger numerous chronic illnesses. Our body and mind are deeply interconnected, and this is where meditation plays a fundamental role.

Dr Joe Dispenza, one of the leading experts on neuroplasticity, explains that our mind has the incredible ability to reorganise itself and form new neural connections throughout life. Meditation is a powerful tool to activate this neuroplasticity, allowing us to replace negative mental patterns with states of calm, clarity, and balance.

Dr Mark Hyman, a leading figure in Functional Medicine, emphasises that chronic stress disrupts our hormonal and immune systems, worsening inflammation and impeding recovery. Regular meditation helps reduce the stress response, balance hormones, and strengthen the immune system.

But be aware: meditation is not a magic cure and does not replace therapy or medical treatment. It is an essential complement — daily work with yourself.

Meditating should be as natural as brushing your teeth — a simple habit that protects and nurtures your mental and physical health.

So, here is a list of meditations I recommend, to help you begin or deepen your practice, experiencing in your body and mind the transformation that only calmness and mindful presence can bring.
